How to Use Fiberglass Cloth?

Fiberglass cloth is a crucial material in producing FRP (Fiber-Reinforced Polymer) products. This inorganic, non-metallic material boasts excellent performance and numerous advantages, particularly in terms of corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and insulation. However, its brittleness is a notable drawback, albeit its mechanical properties remain favorable.

Industrial Uses of Fiberglass Cloth

Fiberglass cloth is primarily used in various industrial applications such as:

  1. Pipe Anticorrosion: The process involves descaling the pipe, then wrapping it with fiberglass cloth of suitable density coated with asphalt or other products. Typically, two or three layers are applied.

  2. Thermal Insulation: After anti-corrosion treatment, the pipe is wrapped with insulation material or an insulation tube. Fiberglass cloth of appropriate width and density is then wrapped around the insulation layer, followed by a coating or direct wrapping with asphalt cloth. This ensures the pipeline is resistant to corrosion, decay, weathering, water, and sunlight.

Other common applications include flue (exhaust ducts), European-style lightweight wall panels, sandstone murals, glass fiber-reinforced plastic products, and GRC components. Fiberglass cloth is also used in thermal insulation boards, composite boards, and movable boards for walls.

Features of Fiberglass Cloth

  1. Temperature Resistance: Can be used in temperatures ranging from -196℃ to 300℃.
  2. Non-Adhesive Surface: Does not easily adhere to other substances.
  3. Chemical Resistance: Resists strong acids, strong alkalis, aqua regia, and various organic solvents, and can withstand exposure to chemicals.
  4. Low Friction Coefficient: Ideal for oil-free self-lubrication.
  5. Light Transmittance: Achieves a light transmittance of 6% to 13%.
  6. High Insulating Properties: Offers excellent insulation, UV resistance, and anti-static properties.
  7. High Strength: Boasts good mechanical properties and chemical resistance.

Applications

Fiberglass cloth is typically used as a reinforcing material in composites, electrical insulation, thermal insulation, and circuit boards. Its applications span several sectors:

  • Marine Industry: Used in the hand lay-up process for hulls, storage tanks, cooling towers, ships, and vehicles.
  • Construction Industry: Widely employed for wall reinforcement, exterior wall insulation, and roof waterproofing. It also reinforces materials such as cement, plastic, asphalt, marble, and mosaic. This makes it an ideal engineering material for construction.
  • Industrial Use: Provides heat insulation, fire prevention, and flame retardance. The material absorbs significant heat when exposed to flames, preventing fire propagation and isolating air.

Fiberglass cloth's versatility and robust properties make it an essential material across various industries.
